Martin Chemnitz 1522-1586

  • De Duabus Naturis in Christo. Leipzig, 1600. This is an important work by Martin Chemnitz 1522-1586. It deals with the relationship between the divine and human natures of Christ and the so-called hypostatic (or personal) union between these natures. An old proverb reads: “If Martin Chemnitz had not come along, Martin Luther would hardly have survived.” This adage in Latin: Si Martinus non fuisset, Martinus vix stetisset. Its title in translation is: The Two Natures in Christ: a Monograph Concerning the Two Natures in Christ, their Hypostatic Union, the Communication of their Attributes, and Related Questions: Recently Prepared and Revised on the Basis of Scripture and the Witnesses of the Ancient Church. By Martin Chemnitz. With a Preface by Nicolaus Selnecker. Translated by J. A. O. Preus. St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House, 1971.
